Get a Library Card

You are eligible for a free Shiawassee District Library card if you live in:

  • City limits of Owosso
  • City limits of Durand
  • Bennington Township
  • Owosso Township
  • Rush Township

If you live outside of our service area, you may purchase a non-resident card for your family for $82 per year.

Please plan to present a drivers’ license or state ID card with your current address if you are 18 years of age or older.

You can register for a child card by providing written parent/guardian consent. Accounts for those under age 18 will be linked to the adult submitting the application; the adult account must be in good standing.

Using Your Card

Your Shiawassee District Library card gives you access to books, movies, homework help, and more. Using digital services like our catalog and online resources requires you to log in with your library card number (see the back of your card) and a PIN/Password. If you aren’t sure what your PIN is, try your full phone number (including the area code.)  If this does not work, please contact us.

Our online catalog system allows you to review your checked out items, place items on hold, make requests, and renew. Review our guides below for more information about using your account and the online catalog.

Holds & Requests

Can’t find something you want on our shelves? You can log into your library account to:

  • Place a hold on a checked-out item
  • Register for our Reserve Express service, which automatically adds you to the list for your favorite popular authors
  • Request the item from another Michigan library
  • Request that the library purchase the item to add the item to its collection

Checkout Periods, Auto Renew & Interlibrary Loan Renewals

Most books can be checked out for 3 weeks. Magazines can be checked out for 1 week. DVD/Blu-Rays are loaned for 1 week.

You may renew most items. In fact, we have recently added automatic renewal of eligible  items belonging to the Shiawassee District Library.

Renewals are not allowed if another person has the item on hold.

Items borrowed from other libraries will not automatically renew.  If you get in touch with us, we may be able to renew depending upon the lending library's policy. You can request a renewal online, by phone, or at a library branch.

Fines

SDL is a Fine-Free Library

The Shiawassee District Library believes in free and equal access for all. Access for everyone is to everyone’s advantage—we all benefit from a curious and engaged community. For this reason, we choose not to charge overdue fines to our patrons on our materials. (Charges for lost and damaged items still apply.) We want to do our part to make it as easy and enjoyable as possible for everyone to use the library.

In return, we ask everyone to do their part to be responsible library users. Patrons should make a habit of returning items on or before the due date. It’s not just the right thing to do—it’s how libraries work. If an item is overdue, reminders will be sent using text messages, emails, and/or mailings.

Lost/Damaged Items:  Borrowers will be charged the retail cost of lost and/or damaged items.
